Hunting Sambar on Victorian Public Land

October 07, 2016

Sambar deer hunting on Victorian public land has never been better with most hunters making contact with deer on a regular basis.

Victoria has large publically accessible hunting areas that can be enjoyed by all. This includes overseas hunters that are more than welcomed to share in our hunting opportunities.

To enjoy this world class deer hunting opportunity you only need a game licence for $55 (the same price the locals pay).

For the keen hunter’s that are prepared to walk the km’s, contact with sambar will be frequent. Sambar hunting can take place from fringe country to terrain similar to the mountains of New Zealand.

The Alpine hunting areas are picturesque and make for great adventure. Many hunters strap the back pack on and take on hunts deep into the wilderness for that extra bit of adventure. This is not essential as sambar can be also be common on public land fringe areas.

Recently I had a 4-day backpack hunt into Victorian public land chasing the challenging sambar stags.

Mike and myself picked an area that he had been scouting for some time and we decided to pack into a position that would have us closer to the action.

Over the 3 day hunt we managed to put glass on 22 sambar and howl quite a few wild dogs.

The area was rich with sign with many wallows, preaches and fresh marks seen along the steep terrain.

Mike managed to take a nice stag on the last hunt. The work really started here as we had a 3 hour climb out to remove some meat and the antlers.

My Hunters Element gear performed well and I was extremely impressed with the Plateau Packable Pack. It enabled me to get 15kgs of meat out without destroying all the camera gear in my backpack.

Even if not being used as a backpack the Plateau Pack helps keep you meat or capes contained shielding and protecting your gear from blood or moisture damage.

In the coming weeks we will be taking on some bigger alpine hunts once the feed in the alpine regions fire.

If you want to take on a sambar hunt I have linked to the game licence that is required for overseas hunters.

Happy Hunting

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
